Just wanted everyone's thoughts on why did you purchase your Subaru. I asked the question to a co-worker, his short answer was, "when i test drove my wrx..."

At that point, he was sold!!

Back in 98 I drove my cousins 98 Legacy and loved it. In 02 when the WRX first came out I really wanted one but couldnt afford it. Then in 04 when the STI's came out I wanted that but again I couldnt afford that but, I was able to get an 02 WRX. Then in 06 I toasted 2nd gear in the WRX (go figure) and sold that to by and 04 STI.

Late 90's I drove a company owned Loyale wagon. I knew nothing of Subarus other than they had ugly boxy styling and I would never in a million years consider buying one. The thing looked like a$$ and I was actually embarrassed to drive it; my daily driver was a modded silver '85 Corolla GT-S. I had even asked my boss if I could use my personal car to do my runs! Image...it's so important Wink

My first day on the job I reluctantly got in and did my routes and to my surprise the car drove awesome! I mean, I was so used to screaming my rev-happy 4A-GE to get any real power out of it but in contrast the Loyale was happy low in the rev range, so torquey for a 4-cylinder. I was also surprised at the fuel economy (I was a poor student so this was important). I could leave it in 4th gear and do about 80% of my driving in it. It handled fairly well considering it was a wagon and in general I just loved to drive it. I found myself looking forward to driving it at work, haha!

I remember lifting the hood one morning just to see what was under there & I near crapped my pants when I saw the spare tire on the engine! I took a quick glance around the engine bay, saw the opposed flat four, dreaded the day I had to change the accessory belts, and shut the hood. I was confused for the rest of the day thinking about the spare tire....

Over the years I've watched the models come out with nicer styling and since '02 have wanted a WRX. The rest is history.

J

Why did you purchase a Subaru? Empty Re: Why did you purchase a Subaru?

Post  gummx97 Sat Dec 06, 2008 9:18 am

good stories guys...

my first subaru was a 1985 GL, it was FWD and I loved that car in snow! After a few years, traded that GL for a Subaru Justy. Yes, it's those 3 cylinder engines back then in the late 80's or early 90's. That 3 cylinder made 39MPG back then! I also pushed it along the turnpike, it ran up to 90MPH! But, hell, the engine was racing at 4500RPMs!! I had to slow down since it felt that the car will rip itself apart.

Both Subarus handled well in snow. I lived in New England back then so snow was a staple during winter times.

Sometime late last year, Jay tried to sell me his STI. Believe it or not, he did, but I never given much thought to it. Jay was, and still is, into fast cars and his taste, errr, viewpoint of fast cars was something I didn't share.

It was then when I paid off my Nissan Frontier that it was time for a "spare" vehicle in case something had happened and I needed to get to work. I got in touch with Jay again and he was still willing to sell his STI. Being impatient that I am, I told Jay of the STI parked at Prestige in Tamuning. We test drove it the same day.

After sitting in the cockpit, the STI was not big deal, sure the interior was spartan and minimal. Typical manual tranny, typical complement of guages, thought it was "ordinary". Jay insisted that I test drove the thing. Ok, nothing to lose.

What ensued on that test drive was short of a religious experience! The boost on the car just blew my mind! The handling was not what I expected, the beast turned on rails up and down Nimitz Hill! All the while, Jay was stomping his foot in the backseat and laughing out of sheer joy. My wife was in the passenger seat and I am sure her knuckles were white from gripping the handles in the door.

After returning the vehicle, I had to have it and made arrangements to acquire the funds to get the car asap! I even had to ask my wife how the interior looked like after several days since all I could remember was the drive!

Well, I've had three subarus in this sordid lifetime and this latest vehicle is just fantastic...despite the 18MPG I am getting out of it!! affraid

I lived like a zombie in Waltham, Massachusetts.

I hated driving through CT whenever I passed by on my way to Toronto, Canada. State Troopers in CT were all over the place and very very visible on the highways. Then again, my 3 cylinder Justy wasn't a prime "cop-stopper!" pig

I noticed no one has posted here in awhile. This is a good place for new and old members to generate interest in our cars. Here's my story:
I'm an old Acura Integra GS-R 99 black ported, modded, "Drive it like you stole it!" freak. I loved that car...in my UGM GDJ25 I still reach for controls my old car had.
To be honest, I wanted an Evolution X, but Mitsubishi won't ship it to Guam without 93 octane at the pumps. I used to drive by Prestige and tell the wife, "Look at the Evo Fighters." I know the two were head to head since ever since, but I liked the way the Evo looked more.
I didn't dig the Bug eye, the Peanut was okay, but being who I am...I liked the Pig. But when I was ready they were all gone, and the Hatch was here.
Then one day I saw the last Pig for sale at Prestige. I could have stolen any car there since I had the whole key box and no one around, but I waited for the salespeople to return and got a good price from the Boss Mr Shen, for not stealing his cars.
I went for a test drive. Route 1 opened up in East Hagatna and I had to open up the boost a bit. Wow. I thought the saleperson would complain, but all Chris said was try "Nimitz Hill."
I remember going up Maina side, with cars going down, doing about --MPH (NOTE: Edited to protect the innocent and the timid.) The car felt like it was on rails. Good grip, a little understeer, but confident. We hit a road crew at the top of the hill. Gotta love those Brembo piston brakes.
Drove back to Prestige with a smile on my face. I still have the smile today. My biggest regret is not being able to drive my car more, even though it is my daily-driver. Thinking about Agat-Umatac road soon, minus a blue light escort. When I itch, I make a detour up Nimitz on the way home.
Why did I buy MY Subaru? Probably the same reason you brought yours...You Drove It!!! That's how we do!!! Shooto

There was no Subaru dealer at that time I bought my car, and guess what? I did not even notice that it does not have a radio after the test drive and purchased the car, hahahahahha.

Post  gonzosti Tue Aug 25, 2009 7:35 am

I remember bout 2006 seeing Jay's `04 white STI on the road and at his work from time to time and really loved the look of it. Went searching on line and even went as far as going to San Diego to purchase one (loved the peanut eye front end) but couldnt work out a deal + shipping. I then decided on purchasing a brand new 06 when i got back on island. I saw the first black 06 on the road which was owned by a blonde lady (hot)...chased her down but couldnt stop her. I saw the Prestige license plate frame and instantly went to Dededo and saw the Silver STI in their lot..That was it..didnt even test drive the thing...just went and made the purchase..They told me that they had a WRB one at the port and I did not hesitate (gotta love that world rally blue). Got the WRB STI but had to wait 1 week after purchase cause they needed it for the 1st Hawaiian bank auto show...longest week of my life (besides the longest year most of you know about). I love this ride...The looks, sound and feel are just all out totally amazing. And thanks to all of you at SCG another reason to love owning a Subaru...

Post  cabrez99 Tue Aug 25, 2009 1:11 pm

Well i was on a search for my first brand new car. My first choice was prestige, always eyed the STI. A good friend of mine worked for prestige before moving over to AK. I brought it up to him about buying a car, he offered to bring down an STI to test drive, you have no idea what was running through my brain when he mentioned "STI". The next day, there was an STI waiting for me to take the front seat. He brought his wife with him, so that i couldn't put the pedal to the metal, i pretended that she did not exist in the back seat. Brought the STI to Agana and stretch her legs. After that i made up my mind, the STI waws gonna be that first car that i purchase. Unfortunatley, i had to bring the "WARDEN" and she decided that the STI would not be the car for me only because she couldn't drive manuel, so i had to settle for and Impreza (4eat). I love my car even if it is not turbo equip, one day, after i complete my payments and STI motor swap with trans will be planted in the impreza "SLEEPER". This is my story on why i bought my Subaru, now i will make my history with it.........because that's what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.......

Post  Mmanni39 Tue Aug 25, 2009 2:21 pm

I never thought I would buy a Subaru, reason being growing up as kid thought they were so ugly I mean come on the Brat, cool thing was it had chairs in the back to sit on with seat belts and being young sitting in the back was cool, or how about he SVX, who would want a car where you have two windows and only the bottom half rolls down imagine the military standards of tinting I had to go through lol! , mind you I was young. Heart and mind was set on a sports compact car but what, really didn't know much about Subarus, but I did know that Legacy Wagon my nina used to pick me up in was hella fast, affraid and never seen a wagon with a hood scope either thought that was rather cool Cool . Lets get back on track, fell in love with Subaru when a friend of mine, gave me a courtesy ride in his bug eyed, and holy crap in my pants when he boosted! Shocked I mean modded, stand alone study the whole nine yards and some. Gave me advice on if you are opting for a Subie should wait until the STi comes out. I said STi Jeff, what the hell is that I want what you have, Bri top of line Subaru with 300/300 you know what I mean by the numbers presented. Took his word for it and ordered one, shipped it to England, drove it, love it, friends think its sick, wife loves it, kids can't get enough riding in it, its what makes a subaru a subaru. But most of all the Subaru community is awesome, and the most awesome part is I am with the best Subaru community Subaru Club of Guam.

Dohnn17, don't try to open your car everyday...Just do it! Find a good road, look around, be safe, and let your car stretch it's legs. These cars were not meant to be driven too slow. Just be safe. I love my car, I know you all love yours. Very Happy
